The UMSOM, Center for Advanced Research Training & Innovation (CARTI) is offering the following two (2) interactive grant writing classes in the Fall: 1. NIH Career Development (K) Grant Writing Class and 2. Writing Your First R01.
We are writing to ask if you have any faculty or senior fellows whom you would recommend participating in either class. Please see the details below for each class. In addition, we have attached a syllabus for each class and an application for the R01 class to share with interested participants.
1. NIH Career Development (K) Grant Writing Class
TIME: Wednesdays 9-11am
DATES: September 10 – November 12, 2025
LOCATION: Hybrid (6 virtual + 4 in MSTF 318)
INSTRUCTOR: Marey Shriver, PhD, Executive Director of Faculty Development, Center for Advanced Research Training & Innovation (CARTI)
This class is intended for senior postdoctoral fellows and early stage faculty who are beginning to write an NIH K01, K08, or K23 grant, and who intend to submit in February or June of 2026. Participants should have a well-formed idea and identified mentors so that they are prepared to start drafting components of their application. Class will meet over Zoom or in person every Wednesday from 9-11am, starting on September 10th. The class size is small, with a maximum of 8-10 participants. Participants will be selected based on the conceptual development of their research question and completeness of their proposed mentoring team.
Please note: Participants must have approval from their Department Chair, including confirmation of 75% protected time and the appropriate resources for a candidate to conduct the award, which is a required component of an NIH K application.
Please nominate senior postdocs and/or faculty in your department whom you would like us to invite to participate, or you may forward this invitation to the appropriate postdocs and/or faculty. Alternatively, please let us know if you do not have any postdocs or faculty to nominate at this time. Those interested should contact Dr. Marey Shriver at mshriver@som.umaryland.edu before Friday, August 22nd.
