UMGCCC’s catchment area encompasses a 10-county region of central Maryland, home to approximately 5.4 million people. The catchment area surrounds UMGCCC, located in Baltimore, reflects the Baltimore-DC corridor, and includes the Maryland state capital of Annapolis. Aim 1 of the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement is to describe the UMGCCC catchment area using a data-driven approach and use needs assessment data and community-engaged input to inform and prioritize research and cancer control activities.
The UMGCCC catchment area is 53% White, 32% Black, and 11% Hispanic/Latino. The top cancers impacting our catchment area include but are not limited to lung, prostate, breast, colorectal, cervical. These characteristics underscore the importance of addressing social determinants of health, expanding access to care, and ensuring our research and outreach activities are responsive to community needs. Prominent cancer risk factors in our catchment area include tobacco use and obesity as well as social determinants of health.
