Program Overview

The NSIP is a 10-week summer internship that supports twenty-one undergraduate students with genuine interest in cancer research. The program provides integrated research, educational and clinical experiences that emphasize the translation of laboratory discoveries into clinical applications and inspire the next generation of cancer researchers and physician-scientists.

Program Highlights

Students are matched with UMGCCC faculty mentors to conduct projects in cutting edge areas of basic, translational, and/or clinical cancer research. Through the program students will:

  • Engage in Research that spans the hallmarks of cancer, including targeted drug discovery, signal transduction, apoptosis, and metastasis.
  • Receive Hands-on Lab Training through the Laboratory Practice and Techniques course at Loyola University Maryland .
  • Attend Career Roundtable with UMB Faculty: Scientists, Clinicians, Administrators, etc. in conjunction with the Office of Student Research .
  • Participate in “Bench to Bedside and Back” Lecture Series and small group analysis of ongoing clinical trials, with UMGCCC Fellows providing interns with specific examples of a translational pipeline in action. Presented by the Translational Cancer Research group.
  • Shadow UMGCCC Clinicians to gain direct exposure to clinical oncology.
  • Join in Social Activities like an Orioles baseball game and ice cream socials as an opportunity to have informal interactions with mentors and lab mates, learn more about the UMGCCC research community, and discover Baltimore attractions.
  • Present at the Final Symposium where interns deliver oral and poster presentations of their research to the mentors, program sponsors, and research faculty.
Loyola University Partnership

Thank you to Loyola University for our longstanding partnership in providing students with hands-on laboratory training!

“It is always exciting to welcome NSIP interns to the Loyola campus each year for their one-week session on laboratory techniques. While learning essential laboratory skills is the main focus of most of our activities, building confidence in the lab and a sense of community among the interns is even more rewarding. That connection to the group continues through the summer and long after leaving the program.”
